Call for Abstracts Now Open for CCBST 2027

For 40 years and now in its 17th iteration, the Canadian Conference on Building Science and Technology has been bringing together building science researchers, designers, material suppliers, and practitioners to discuss this ever-evolving field. This conference has been highly successful each time it has been held, earning a global reputation as a leading showcase for advances in design, construction, renovation, repair, and operation of buildings and building enclosures. We anticipate the 2027 conference to be the best yet, and we invite you to be a part of it.

The overall theme of the conference is Building Innovation, Imagination, and Integrity. We anticipate the event will bring together leaders in this field from across Canada and the world to discuss how we can design, maintain, and operate our buildings in ways that lead to healthier indoor environments and reduced impact on the natural environment by using new and innovative materials, construction techniques, and ways of thinking.

You are invited to submit an abstract, no longer than 400 words, which summarizes the objectives, approach, results, and conclusions of your proposed paper. Abstracts must be received by December 4, 2026. Potential authors include architects, engineers, building scientists, academic researchers, building code and regulatory authorities, contractors, developers, maintenance professionals, property managers, and construction material technical representatives.

Without limiting the goal of the conference as outlined above, the following themes may be used as a guide for potential topics:

Academic Research

Typical content would include papers that report the results of research that advances the understanding of the design and performance of building envelope systems, designs, or components.  The papers must be peer-reviewed and provide new insights.  Papers may be more fulsome than the oral presentation.  Papers must follow the structure of an advanced hypothesis, background literature review, assessment methodology, discussion of findings and conclusions with recommendations.  Oral presentations may abbreviate the literature review and focus on the hypotheses and results and conclusions.  Key to the adoption of the paper will be an explanation of what the learner will be able to take away from the research and apply to daily practice. The contribution from the papers in this stream is defined by new, validated knowledge established through research and/or peer review. A new design employed on a single project in practice belongs in Innovative Practice, even if the author is a researcher.

Forensic Assessment and Instrumentation

Typical content would include papers that report on the means and methods employed to establish a coherent assessment of as-found conditions that failed to meet performance expectations.  The paper should focus on the failure mechanism, means of developing a coherent assessment of the cause of degradation, distress, of decay, how the redesign or repair addressed the mechanisms of failure, and improved the performance of the building, system, or component.  Oral presentations may abbreviate the written paper to focus on the rationale for selection of the repair as related to the observed performance issues.  Key to the adoption of the paper will be the use of innovative evaluation and/or remedial techniques and how learners may apply those techniques in their daily practices. Note: The contribution from the papers in this stream is defined by investigating and remediating an existing or failed building or an assembly.  It is different from the Academic (generalizable research) and Innovative Practice (new design and construction).

Innovative Practice in Building Design Construction

Typical content would include papers that address new building design and construction challenges and how they are met in practice. Papers would highlight the processes for identifying the nature and scope of the challenges, identify physical, financial and operational obstacles and how those were overcome, and how the new design became integrated into the community space.  Papers should include options considered and reasons for dismissal, hurdles encountered from various stakeholders, as well as an honest reflection of what might have been done well or differently. The oral presentation would abbreviate the written paper and highlight the project objectives, pathway to success, rationale for choosing the design or construction practices, and pros and cons of doing so.  Key to the adoption of the paper will be the use of innovative thinking, actions, and/or methods to realize the final outcome and how learners can begin to employ those in their daily practices.  Note: The contribution from the papers in this stream is defined by the delivery of a real project. If the contribution is new knowledge established through research and peer review,  it belongs in Academic stream.
